All current UNSW staff and students are welcome to undertake free LGBTIQ+ training and Ally@UNSW training.

In 2021, the training content and delivery has been revitalised and will be delivered as a two-step model:

Workshop 1: LGBTIQ+ Foundations

Workshop 2: Becoming an Active Ally@UNSW*

The Division of EDI welcomes two new co-facilitators, Michelle Sanders, Team Lead, Equitable Learning Services and Luce, De Buitleir Andrews, Principal The Institute for Diversity, Equity and Advocacy to deliver this exciting new training program.

Managers, supervisors, academics and any staff or students in leadership or support roles are especially encouraged to attend.

All current staff and students are welcome to attend. This includes all identifying and non-identifying LGBTIQ+ who are new to UNSW, wish to broaden their knowledge about LGBTIQ+ communities, changed job roles or need to refresh their knowledge.

This 2-3.5 hour (depending on face-to-face or online delivery) introductory workshop provides a broad set of information to increase awareness of critical past and current impacts and influences on the lived experience of LGBTIQ+ people with a clear focus on the university environment.

Topics include:

  • Basic knowledge around LGBTIQ+ people and communities, including unpacking various forms of the acronym
  • The difference between sex characteristics, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
  • Understanding health and wellbeing and the impacts of social stigma and assumptions
  • Intersectionality
  • Inclusive Language and Pronouns
  • Respectful and inclusive behaviours in the workplace and classroom
  • Overview of support and initiatives at UNSW
  • Role and importance of Allies  

For students, this course is accreditable as part of the UNSW Student Leadership Program.

All staff who have completed Workshop 1: LGBTIQ+ Foundations are encouraged to become active Allies by completing Workshop 2.

Existing Allies who complete Workshop 2 by July 2022 will remain on the Ally website as a visible Ally@UNSW.

This 1.5-2 hour workshop (depending on face-to-face or online delivery) focuses on the role of an active Ally@UNSW, including the tools to be a visible, confidential source of support and to be active, influence and advocate on behalf of LGBTIQ+ people and communities at UNSW and broadly.

  • The role of an active Ally
  • active representation and being an active bystander
  • Topical issues
  • Increasing Visibility
  • Finding your voice
  • The Power of Personal Narratives
  • Creating new conversations

Your role as an active Ally@UNSW involves a commitment to creating an inclusive environment for LGBTIQ+ identifying staff and students and therefore for all members of the UNSW community. It includes being publicly listed on the Ally website and being a trusted, safe confidential contact who continues to learn, recommends areas for improvement at UNSW, calls out discrimination when it’s safe to do so, and encourages LGBTIQ+ voices – sharing articles, posting on social media and engaging your local areas to celebrate and recognise Days of Significance like Mardi GrasIDAHOBIT and Wear It Purple.
