UNSW recognises that trans and gender diverse people can face unique and complex challenges, and that a supportive work environment can play a central role in enhancing a staff member’s wellbeing.

In collaboration with trans and gender diverse students, staff, allies@UNSW and the University community, UNSW developed a range of guidelines and resources, which take a person-centred approach to gender affirmation. These resources were updated in March 2023.

Supporting students and staff

In collaboration with trans and gender diverse students, staff, Allies and the University community, UNSW has developed a Guideline which takes a person-centred approach to gender affirmation.

The roll-out of the gender inclusive (all-gendered) bathrooms at UNSW’s Paddington campus is part of our active commitment to create an inclusive and respectful campus for all students and staff.

Since 2008, UNSW has built a network of students and staff who pledge to take a proactive stance against discrimination based on diverse genders, sexes and sexualities.

We understand that language matters, can be contested and is constantly evolving. Using appropriate terminology in all forms of communication allows people to feel included.

2022 Statement of Support

In April 2022, UNSW published a statement of support following the shocking targeting of trans and gender diverse people in Australia. The statement is still relevant today and UNSW reaffirms our commitment to ensuring a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, staff and visitors.
