Reasonable Adjustments

What is a reasonable adjustment? 

The University is obliged to make a reasonable adjustment to accommodate the needs of a person with a disability. A reasonable adjustment means changing some feature of the work situation so that people with disabilities can do their work more effectively.  

A request for an adjustment would be considered reasonable unless it caused an unjustifiable hardship for the University. For example, the term adjustment could mean adjusting access to buildings and rooms, modifying equipment, re-designing jobs or work areas and implementing more flexible work practices. 

The principle of reasonable adjustment affects decisions in all areas of employment. It encourages more flexible and creative ways of working and may assist in improving conditions for everyone, for example, by improving access to buildings and rooms. 


Reasonable Adjustment Guidelines

UNSW's Reasonable Adjustment Guidelines are designed to help staff navigate the reasonable adjustment process and assist managers to support current and prospective staff with visible and non-visible disability. 


Evacuation procedures for staff with disability 

Being an inclusive employer means taking all staff needs into consideration when implementing Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) procedures. Procedures for fire and other emergencies should always include provisions for the evacuation of people with disability. To ensure safe evacuation, a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) should be implemented for each person with a disability.
