Third year, part-time student, Bachelor of Commerce
Early into her studies, Krystal was diagnosed with a physical disability that impacted upon her ability to write or type for more than 10-minutes periods. She relies on a voice-to-text program to complete assignments and studies part-time to accommodate the demands of student-life.
“I have received great support from the student collective who actively listen and are ready to help as much as possible,” she says.
“I remember when I received limited support from the University. It was really tough.” Krystal has since been given a scribe for every subject in 2019. “This is amazing news. It tells me things are changing at UNSW to help students with disabilities achieve their study goals.
Krystal says her student peers have been accepting and flexible, working alongside her to find an approach to group assignments that reflects everyone’s strengths. “The group are happy to do the ‘physical’ doing on the assignment while I work to contribute to the ‘mental’ doing. It works really well,” she says.
