Mardi Gras

16 February – 3 March 2024

Proud to celebrate Sydney Mardi Gras

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is an annual celebration of LGBTQIA+ communities.

There are lots of ways to get involved to celebrate and show your pride on campus and beyond this year.

What's on at UNSW

New dates: Wednesday 21 February & Wednesday 28 February | 12 – 2pm | Helen Maguire Lawn

The City of Sydney has cancelled Mardi Gras Fair Day which was scheduled for 18 February. We are now relocating our queer research museum to the Helen Maguire Lawn on both Wednesday 21 February and Wednesday 28 February, 12-2pm (see rescheduled Pride on the Quad event details). Come and visit our museum where we'll be showcasing the works of UNSW queer researchers and UNSW queer research.

Thursday 8 February & Tuesday 20 February | John Niland Scientia

Kick off the Mardi Gras celebrations at these fabulous Drag Bingo sessions led by our host and dazzling drag queen, Ivory Glaze. We invite you to enjoy, participate and battle it out for bingo glory!

A light morning or afternoon tea will be provided.

Thursday 29 February | 6pm | The Roundhouse

Get pumped, get proud and get ready to party at the Roundhouse Mardi Pardi! For the 5th year in a row, we are hosting queer talent and glittering-up to celebrate Mardi Gras at UNSW.

Friday 1 March | 11am | Village Green

Play with pride! Arc Sport is hosting a friendly day of social sport with netball and touch football competitions - plus free food, drag shows, music and good vibes. Everyone is welcome.

Saturday 2 March | 6 - 10pm | UNSW Art & Design

Beat the crowds and watch one of Sydney’s most iconic events on the big screen at UNSW Art & Design. Join us to watch the parade plus live queer entertainment, glitter station, drinks and food. If this is your first Mardi Gras, it’s the perfect event to soak up the pride vibes.

Monday 4 March | 6.30 - 7.30pm | John Niland Scientia

Join Bryan Washington and host Benjamin Law in an enriching discussion about Washington’s latest novel, Family Meal. Washington sheds light on the intersection of queerness, family dynamics, and vulnerability as the lives of young men collide in this story about the sustenance of friendship, and the taste of loss.

Tuesday 27 February | 1 - 3pm | John Niland Scientia

Join us on our first Staff Engagement Event of 2024!

The theme will be Mardi Gras, dress up in your most sparkly or colourful ensemble to win a best dressed prize and enjoy your afternoon with an assortment of tasty and colourful treats, DIY nail painting, wooden bracelet making, DIY wooden earring decoration and glitter hairspray on tap.
