International Women's Day

International Women’s Day has become a time to reflect on progress, to call for change and to celebrate the courage and determination of the women who changed history, and those who will advance gender equality into the future. It is an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilise for meaningful change.

The global UN Women theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021 is “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”.

What misconceptions do we still have about women's minds and bodies? British science journalist and author, Angela Saini, joins  leading cancer researcher and founder of the STEMMinist Book club, Caroline Ford for a conversation about bias in science, medicine and the public understanding of gender, and how to build a more accurate picture of human difference.

The world is crying out for a new model of leadership, but what is it? The Leadership documents the inaugural Homeward Bound Project and shines a light on the systemic inequities faced by women in STEMM. A panel of academics and policy makers will unpack the major themes of the documentary and discuss the challenges and rewards of implementing practices of inclusive science.

But there are inspiring women who are not only leaders the their fields in the COVID-19 response, but are addressing some of the inequalities experienced by women in their communities.

The UNSW Women's Wellbeing Academy launched it's first Small Project Grants Program in October 2020. Twelve inspiring, diverse projects were successful, and received $4,000 in funding to kick off their projects. Join us as we hear the from the project team winners, who will present short pitches about their projects.

UNSW Galleries is currently exhibiting the powerful work of two leading Australian artists. Fractures & Frequencies brings together recent works by Quandamooka artist Megan Cope, investigating listening practices and extractive industries in Australia. INFRACTIONS is a feature length video installation by Rachel O'Reilly, platforming the struggles of frontline Indigenous cultural workers against the threat of shale gas fracking.

Fractures & Frequencies is presented in association with Sydney Festival. INFRACTIONS is presented in partnership with the Institute of Modern Art.

UNSW Tax Clinic offers free, independent and confidential tax advice for eligible individuals and small businesses.

For 2021 Women’s Week, they are supporting women who are experiencing financial hardship, and are unable to access tax advice and support.

UNSW Business School & UNSW Women’s Wellbeing Academy thank Women NSW (NSW Department of Communities & Justice) for their generous support of this initiative.

Addressing the underrepresentation of women in entrepreneurship, New Wave offers UNSW students, staff and alumni who identify as women, at any stage of their journey, access to skills-building workshops, expert masterclasses and industry-leading mentors to form, refine and test their startup ideas
