Tutoring partnership provides additional support to vulnerable HSC students

A partnership with Cluey Learning will deliver free online tutoring to support HSC students from UNSW Gateway partner schools.

UNSW has partnered with Cluey Learning to deliver free online tutoring to Year 12 students from underrepresented backgrounds, to support them in their Higher School Certificate (HSC). The partnership will provide 1000 hours of specialised tutoring to a group of 100 students from UNSW Gateway partner schools as part of the UNSW Gateway Winter Program.

“This partnership ensures additional academic supports are in place for some of our most vulnerable HSC students,” said Mary Teague, Director, Access and Equity (Students).

“It has been a challenging year for all schools and Year 12 students, and in times of crisis, the impacts are greater again for those students already experiencing educational disadvantage. We hope this expert academic tutoring service will alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty for students,” Ms Teague said.

The Access and Equity (Students) team leads the UNSW Gateway Program and UNSW’s pre-tertiary outreach program. It works directly with schools and students from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds to support their HSC preparation and Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) attainment and increase their access to university. As students across NSW prepare for their HSC, recent physical distancing and self-isolation has meant many students completed most of Term 1 at home with limited face-to-face teaching.

“Cluey is delighted to be partnering with UNSW to support students in the final study stretch leading up to their HSC exams,” said Dr Selina Samuels, Cluey’s Chief Learning Officer (pictured above).

“Our focus is on filling any gaps of knowledge or understanding and – most importantly – building the sorts of study and organisational skills that will continue to be vital as students transition into tertiary study and work. Our programs and our tutors provide tailored one-to-one support to ensure that the students can face their final exams with confidence.”

The UNSW Gateway Winter Program and associated Cluey Learning tutoring will be delivered online and offer one-on-one tutoring and HSC subject support. The UNSW Gateway Winter Program, and the new early conditional offer scheme, will reach over 1000 students from Gateway schools across NSW. To learn more, visit gateway.unsw.edu.au.
