Diversity Festival 2023: Student Artwork Competition

Imagine your artwork at the Catherine Harris Courtyard on Kensington campus! In September and October 2023, students were invited to enter their diversity & inclusion themed designs for a chance to win this exciting competition.

As part of Diversity Festival 2023, the Basser Steps have been redesigned to reflect the latest Progress Pride Flag and two new diversity & inclusion murals will be installed on Kensington campus.

We invited students from across UNSW to submit their entries for a new mural painting at the Catherine Harris Courtyard. The winning work will be on display for a period of 12 months.

The winning student will receive a total of $8000 - $2500 at the selection stage for material costs, and $5500 as artist fees and prize money once the artwork has been completed. Students could submit as many designs as they liked.

Entries were open from 9am Monday 18 September and closed at 9am Monday 30 October

What you need to know

The new mural should encourage everyone to feel welcome on campus and celebrate diversity in our community. The artwork should be reflective of an inclusive and diverse environment, be sympathetic to the surroundings, and feel positive and dynamic.

At least one of the project themes should be reflected in your submission. They are:

  • Diversity & inclusion.
  • Identity.
  • Belonging in the UNSW community.

Your design or artwork should initially be submitted as a JPEG or PDF with a maximum file size of 10MB.

If your design or artwork is selected, you will need to be able to produce the artwork as a painted mural, so please consider how you will create and deliver the concept you are proposing.

The artwork itself should be prepared in a format that best suits your intended method of painting on site. The winner will be required to paint the artwork during daylight hours.

All submissions will be considered by a panel of experts and stakeholders, which will select the work they believe to be the most original, excellent, and engaging response to one or more of the project themes. The winning student will be guided through the process of creating completed artwork for installation. This is a great opportunity to have your work displayed on our busy campus, to have a say in the look of the shared courtyard space, and to gain valuable experience for your portfolio.

Entries opened at 9am on Monday 18 September. The competition was open to all current UNSW students.

  • Respond to the brief in a creative way.

  • Our panel of experts and stakeholders will choose the winning submission by Monday 13 November 2023.
  • The winner will receive $2500 at the selection stage for material costs and $5500 as prize money and artist fees, delivered once the works have been fully completed. The material costs may only exceed the $2500 payment through agreement with UNSW with an approved budget revision and provision of receipts.
  • The winner will need to prepare a methodology on how the artwork will be delivered and complete any requested changes following adjudication by Monday 27 November 2023.
  • The winner will then have until Friday 15 December to create their masterpiece! They will be guided through the process of creating completed artwork for installation.
